About the Opportunity

The Scattering beamline group at the Australian Synchrotron currently seeks a motivated and driven Group Manager to oversee the Scattering Beamlines. This opportunity will allow you to lead and guide the staffing, operation, and advancement of synchrotron beamlines within your designated group while making substantial contributions to research, industry engagement, and outreach efforts.

The Beamline Group Manager - Scattering, will manage and lead the Small Angle X-ray Scattering / Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and the Biological Small Angle X-ray Scattering (BioSAXS) beamlines at the Australian Synchrotron. Reporting to the Senior Principal Scientist, the role has significant input into scientific development at the Australian Synchrotron through strategic planning and coordination.

This position is central to ensuring effective interactions and resourcing across this specific beamline group, as well as excellent engagement with other members of the Science Team and other operational teams. About You

In this role, you will lead and manage the Scattering Beamline Group within the Australian Synchrotron Science division, providing leadership, management and scientific direction. This role is pivotal to ensuring effective interactions and resource allocation within the beamline group and fostering strong collaborations with other teams across the facility. You will be required to manage and grow the scientific capabilities and techniques of the beamlines within the specific beamline group, and apply expert knowledge to enable the best possible scientific outcomes. You will be responsible to deliver high-quality, cost-effective user-service, research and industry outcomes whilst also empowering beamline group staff by mentoring them to achieve personal career advancement and organisational objectives.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a beamline group within the Science Team to deliver high-quality user-service, research and industry outcomes.
  • Initiate and conduct leading-edge research which increases beamline demand and standing. Coordinate research activities that lead to scientific capability development.
  • Participate in professional forums, steering committees, and other professional associations. Use networks to collaborate with national and international scientists.
  • Monitor and report on the science, research and operations activities of the beamline group according to overall research strategies and relevant performance metrics.
  • Manage, coach and mentor the beamline group staff. Foster a culture of high performance that encourages innovation, improves productivity, and promotes teamwork and collaboration. 
  • Lead and manage safe working practices, policies, and processes across the beamline group, the facility, and within ANSTO.
