About the Opportunity

The Australian Synchrotron Crystallography Group consists of three single crystal X-ray diffraction beamlines, delivering world leading capabilities to the crystallographic community in Australia, New Zealand and internationally. The MX beamlines cater to a diverse range of scientific disciplines; from environmental processes, mineralogy and energy through to human health and drug discovery. The MX team works closely with our user community, providing expert advice at all stages of the experiment, and ensuring best practises in data collection and structural solution are followed.

As well as maintaining the beamlines on a day-to-day basis, all members of the team are expected to assist in development projects to extend the capabilities of the beamlines and enable the best possible scientific outcomes.  The MX team works collaboratively with scientific, technical, operational and support teams throughout the facility. All members of the team participate in outreach activities to publicise and promote the suite of scientific techniques available at the Australian Synchrotron and to extend the reach of synchrotron science

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day maintenance and set up of the MX beamlines systems;
  • Provide scientific and experimental support, advice and training to national and international synchrotron beamline users, ensuring outcomes from allocated beam-time are maximised and the user experience is optimal;
  • Provide advice, guidance and training for data processing and interpretation during and after experiments;
  • Develop detailed knowledge of relevant scientific and technological advances to provide the best possible scientific outcomes, user support and beamline improvements;
  • Promote beamline activities and facility benefits to the scientific community to increase facility profile, to identify, attract and engage new users and to grow the synchrotron research community;
  • Engage with industrial and commercial clients to promote, develop and deliver techniques to Australian Industry;
  • Remain scientifically productive; through developing your own research, working with industry, or beamline development activities.
