About the Apprenticeship

Our apprenticeships are designed for people who are ready to start a hands-on career in electronics, electrical, mechanical or fabrication trades. You don’t need to have everything figured out yet — if you’re curious, practical, reliable and willing to learn, we’ll support you to build the skills, confidence and workplace behaviours needed to become a qualified tradesperson.

 

Opportunities may include:

  • Certificate III in Electronics and Communications
  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
  • Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade  (Fitting/Machining)
  • Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Sheetmetal working)

 

Over the 4-year apprenticeship, you will work full time, 36.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This includes your weekly TAFE day as part of your ordinary working hours while you complete your relevant trade certification.

 

As an ANSTO apprentice, you will gain practical, hands-on experience in a unique science and technology environment while completing a nationally recognised trade qualification. Depending on your trade pathway, this may include experience in:

  • Electronics, communications and control systems
  • Electrical installation, maintenance and fault finding
  • Mechanical fitting, machining, milling and turning
  • Fabrication, welding and manufacturing techniques
  • Reading and interpreting technical drawings and job instructions
  • Using hand tools, power tools, machinery and specialist equipment safely
  • Maintaining, repairing and supporting equipment used across ANSTO’s facilities
  • Working in a highly regulated environment with a strong focus on safety, quality and compliance
  • Developing problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills
  • Building the confidence and capability to work as part of a skilled trade team

About You

 

We’re looking for people who:

  • Are interested in electronics, electrical, mechanical or fabrication work
  • Enjoy practical, hands-on activities such as school projects, home repairs, metalwork, electronics or other technical tasks
  • Has sound communication, literacy and numeracy skills
  • Shows curiosity, attention to detail and a willingness to solve problems
  • Works well with others and contributes positively to a team environment
  • Is punctual, reliable and ready to learn from feedback and experience
  • Can follow instructions, ask questions when unsure and work safely to complete tasks
  • Understands that safety is essential in every workplace and is willing to follow safe work practices
    Is committed to completing the apprenticeship and building a long-term trade career

 

Eligibility and application process

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance
  • Successfully complete required pre-employment checks, including medical assessments
  • Hold, or be willing to obtain before commencement, a Construction White Card
  • Have a driver’s licence and access to reliable transport (desirable)
  • Not already hold a qualification above Certificate II level in the relevant trade area
