About the Opportunity
The ANSTO Minerals Year in Industry Internship Program is for penultimate year students studying towards relevant scientific and/or engineering degrees. The one-year program provides industry-based learning for students to apply theory and skills to the workplace and use this experience to enhance the value of their remaining study. Participants are required to defer their final year of study to work full-time.
Students joining the ANSTO Minerals program will contribute to lab and pilot scale experimental test work. As an intern, you will be involved in:
- Conducting bench and pilot-scale test work
- Designing, setting up, and operating laboratory and pilot equipment
- Performing sampling and chemical analysis
- Assessing data and preparing preliminary reports and
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
About ANSTO Minerals
The Minerals business is a part of ANSTO’s Commercial Products and Services cluster. We are a team of around 60 consultants and technicians with expertise that covers metallurgy, chemistry, chemical engineering, mineralogy, geology and radiation safety. ANSTO’s Minerals business provides practical solutions and innovative technologies to deliver financial and environmental benefits to the mining and metallurgy industries. Sectors that we work in include important critical minerals such as rare earths, lithium, uranium and a plethora of others. We are also specialists in addressing the challenges associated with radioactivity issues in this context.
About You
Ideal applicants will demonstrate a strong technical foundation, proactive mindset, and excellent collaboration skills. Applicants should be eager to learn and apply knowledge in experimental settings, with a clear commitment to safety.

Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this opportunity, you must:
- be a penultimate year student in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with at least one full year study remaining
- have experience in a university or industry laboratory or other chemistry / chemical engineering related projects
- have hands-on experience within a process or mechanical environment (desirable)
- hold a current driver’s licence and have access to a vehicle (desirable)
The program is scheduled to start Jan/Feb 2026. Opportunities are full-time paid placements with occasional shift work. Students are required to defer study for the year and will need a confirmation letter from their university.
