About the Opportunity

ANSTO’s Centre for Accelerator Science (CAS) is looking for a collaborative and self-motivated person to join their team. CAS operates four tandem particle accelerators and a wide range of advanced (and often bespoke, inhouse designed) engineering systems, scientific instrumentation, equipment, and technologies across twelve beamlines for accelerator science applications and twelve chemistry laboratories for specialised sample processing. CAS offers accelerator mass spectrometry, sample preparation, ion beam analysis, ion beam implantation, and ion beam irradiation - together in one centre - backed by decades of accumulated experience in accelerator science and operations.

As a user facility open to all, supported by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), CAS informs policy, provides critical services for IAEA, and enables discovery and innovation in areas such as environment, climate and health sciences, space technologies, advanced materials for energy and quantum, and cultural heritage.  CAS has received funding under the NCRIS to provide uplift of its accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) capability, this position is funded by this grant. CAS is particularly interested in pursuing new opportunities for their accelerator capabilities to support users in areas of climate and environmental change and archaeological research.  Expertise in these areas will be highly regarded.

About You

This role is ideal for you if you enjoy engaging with people, being hands-on, continuous learning, and working collaboratively. In this position, you will work closely with other physicists, chemists and technical staff in CAS, we will support you to develop and grow your knowledge and application of our capabilities, techniques, and instrumentation to become an expert in operating our accelerator facilities. You will work collaboratively with current users from universities and industry, and with other researchers within ANSTO.  You will use your past experience and collaborative networks to pursue new opportunities in growth areas for CAS. Together we will contribute to scientific outcomes to benefit people and the environment. Your insights are important to us and will contribute to developing our teams and the organisation.

“We are looking for a team member who is curious and collaborative and who will help us build our AMS capabilities and expand our support to exciting high-impact user projects that utilise our accelerator facilities."  - Geraldine Jacobsen, Centre for Accelerator Science

Your Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide scientific and technical support, advice and training to national and international CAS users, including the making of scientific and technical decisions, to ensure CAS accelerator mass spectrometry remains internationally competitive, and ensuring the outcomes from allocated user access projects are maximised and the user experience is optimal;
  • Support user projects in the application of AMS radiocarbon dating to areas of palaeoenvironment and palaeoecological research, climate change and archaeology, by assisting with planning, by operating accelerators, performing experiments and analysing, and interpreting data and issuing reports;
  • Engage with the Australian and international scientific community to develop the user base for CAS to ensure maximum usage of equipment, and to develop the community of collaborators and build and maintain relationships with users to ensure successful outcomes from their projects;
  • Develop knowledge of international best practice and new technological developments, conduct research and development to meet the demands of current and potential future users; support highly technical and complex systems and improvements in accelerator operations that lead to increased efficiencies and better-quality outcomes;
  • Promote and develop outreach activities on behalf of the CAS and ANSTO, including participating in professional forums and other professional associations in line with your interests.
