About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Metallurgical Engineer with strong expertise in Physical Metallurgy to support ANSTO’s operations through the provision of high-quality technical advice, materials testing, and expert failure analysis. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the integrity and reliability of key infrastructure, while contributing to research, development, and commercial projects.

About You

You will bring:

• A strong background in physical metallurgy, materials characterisation, and mechanical testing.
• Experience in failure analysis, infrastructure inspection, or life assessment of engineering materials.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse complex data, produce technical reports, and deliver insights to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Excellent collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
• Commitment to working safely and maintaining high standards of quality and scientific integrity.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Provide expert technical advice and timely recommendations in Physical Metallurgy through the preparation of high-quality technical reports supporting ANSTO operations.
• Lead and conduct mechanical and material property testing, ensuring adherence to safety and quality systems; collate, analyse, and interpret data, and prepare detailed client reports.
• Contribute to technical project delivery, from concept development through to execution, maintaining visibility of progress with internal and external stakeholders.
• Design and execute mechanical testing programs, failure investigations, and inspection activities of critical infrastructure to assess remaining life and recommend corrective actions.
• Collaborate on research and development projects, contributing to scientific publications and outcomes aligned with ANSTO’s strategic objectives.
• Support commercial and client-driven projects, ensuring tasks are completed within agreed timeframes, scope, and budget.
• Foster productive working relationships across multidisciplinary teams, maintaining strong engagement with both internal and external stakeholders.
• Stay abreast of industry best practices and emerging technologies, assessing their relevance and potential benefits to the research group and ANSTO.
• Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, tailoring technical information to varying levels of scientific and technical understanding.
• Take ownership of assigned laboratory areas, ensuring equipment is maintained, operational, and continuously improved.
